PENGGUNAAN METODE THINK–PAIR–SHARE UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN BERBICARA DALAM DISKUSI KELAS SMPN 1 RAWAJITU SELATAN RAWAJITU SELATAN TULANG BAWANG

Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ speaking skills in classroom discussions through the implementation of the Think–Pair–Share (TPS) method at SMPN 1 Rawajitu Selatan, Tulang Bawang. This research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects of the study were students in the 2024/2025 academic year who experienced difficulties in expressing ideas and participating actively in discussions. Data were collected through observation, field notes, informal interviews, and documentation. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ speaking ability after the implementation of TPS. In the think phase, students were given time to process information and formulate ideas individually. During the pair phase, students discussed with their partners, which reduced speaking anxiety and increased confidence. In the share phase, students were able to present their ideas more clearly, coherently, and confidently. Compared to the initial condition, the number of active participants increased substantially, and the quality of spoken responses improved. The study concludes that TPS is effective in enhancing speaking skills because it provides a structured, collaborative, and supportive learning environment. TPS is recommended as an alternative instructional method to foster students’ oral communication skills across various subjects.
