PERAN PEMBELAJARAN BERBASIS CERITA RAKYAT DALAM MENUMBUHKAN APRESIASI SASTRA SISWA KELAS XI A AMAL BAKTI

Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of folklore-based learning in fostering literary appreciation among eleventh-grade students of class XI A at Amal Bakti. The study was conducted in response to students’ low interest and limited ability to understand literary works, particularly in interpreting meaning and internalizing moral values. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literary appreciation tests. Folklore-based learning was implemented through expressive reading, group discussions, role-playing, and retelling activities. The results show a significant improvement in students’ ability to identify intrinsic elements of stories, interpret symbolic meanings, and relate moral messages to real-life situations. The variety of learning activities encouraged active student engagement, allowing them to develop deeper literary appreciation. Furthermore, folklore proved effective in increasing motivation because its themes and cultural background are closely connected to students’ lived experiences. Students demonstrated improved critical thinking and cultural awareness after participating in the learning process. Overall, the study concludes that folklore-based learning is effective in fostering literary appreciation, strengthening character development, and enhancing students’ appreciation for local culture. These findings can serve as a reference for teachers in designing creative, communicative, and culturally relevant literary learning strategies aligned with students’ needs.
