The supervisory activities of the school principal are carried out in a planned and continuous manner with the aim of improving teachers' performance in teaching. Although the teachers’ performance was already good before the supervision was conducted, it was not yet considered optimal. The problem in this study is to examine the implementation of supervision carried out by the school principal and the teachers' performance in teaching. The research questions are: 1) how is the implementation of the principal’s supervision in improving teachers’ performance; 2) what actions does the principal take to improve the performance of Islamic religious education teachers; and 3) what obstacles does the principal face in improving the performance of Islamic religious education teachers.
This study is a field research using data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used is an analysis aimed at improving teachers’ performance. The findings in this study are: the principal’s supervision planning is carried out in a planned, systematic, and continuous manner. At this stage, the principal carries out the steps of determining the names of teachers to be observed, scheduling observation times, preparing observation guidelines, and deciding whether the classroom observation is done openly with the teachers’ knowledge or not. This is based on an agreement between the principal and the teachers.
During the implementation stage of the observation, the principal’s activities do not disturb the teaching and learning process in the classroom. In fact, at the end of the lesson, the principal motivates the students to keep studying diligently. In the follow-up stage of the supervision results, discussions are held together between teachers and the principal to review the teachers’ shortcomings in teaching, with the hope that teachers can improve in the future.
