In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method with a naturalistic approach, which emphasizes that the research is conducted naturally, as it is, under normal conditions without any manipulation of situations or circumstances, and focuses on natural description. Data collection or phenomenon gathering was carried out in natural and appropriate conditions, known as natural data collection. This approach was chosen because it is able to describe reality in a deep and holistic manner according to field conditions. In addition, this method allows the researcher to obtain more authentic data through direct observation, interviews, and documentation at the research site.
Based on field findings, the professionalism of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah level can be described through several competencies. First, pedagogical competence, which includes teachers’ ability to prepare lesson plans (RPP), syllabus, annual programs (Prota), and semester programs (Promes), the ability to improvise in teaching methods, and the ability to assess student learning outcomes through classroom-based assessment. This competence shows the extent to which teachers are able to design and implement effective learning. Second, personality competence is reflected in the cultivation of self-discipline and responsibility in carrying out duties, which demonstrates the teacher’s exemplary character in the school environment. Third, social competence is reflected in the ability to establish good communication with the principal, colleagues, parents of students, as well as involvement in social and community activities, thereby creating harmonious relationships between the school and its environment. Fourth, professional competence is shown through mastery of subject matter, as indicated by teachers’ academic qualifications, the relevance of their educational background to the subjects taught, and their ability to understand students in depth.
The results of the study indicate that PAI teachers at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah have carried out their professional roles well. This is evident from the implementation of learning activities that are in accordance with established teacher competency standards. However, these competencies still need to be continuously improved through training, self-development, and ongoing evaluation in order to optimize the quality of learning. In this way, it is expected that the quality of graduates or student outcomes will further improve and be able to compete in accordance with the demands of the times.
