To improve the quality of education in schools, the role of the principal in enhancing the quality of the teaching and learning process is highly essential. This is because the principal plays an important role as a leader, supervisor, and educator who is responsible for managing all educational activities in the school.
This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. This approach aims to provide an in-depth description of the principal’s efforts in improving the quality of the teaching and learning process at a public senior high school (SMA Negeri). The data were obtained through direct observation in the field and analysis of the actual conditions within the school environment.
The results of the study show that the quality of human resources at the public senior high school can be categorized as fairly good; however, it still requires further development and improvement. This is evident from the aspect of teacher and staff discipline, which has not yet been optimal. In addition, there are issues in the assignment or distribution of subjects, where some teachers are still teaching subjects that are not in accordance with their educational background or field of expertise. The principal’s efforts to improve the quality of human resources are carried out through various strategies, including establishing cooperation with educational institutions and bureaucratic agencies, as well as encouraging teachers to actively participate in Subject Teacher Working Groups (MGMP). These activities are expected to enhance teachers’ professional competence and broaden their insights in the field of instruction.
Furthermore, in improving the productivity of education staff, the school relies on a system of direct guidance and supervision from the principal. This supervision is carried out in the form of direction, performance appraisal, and administrative monitoring such as attendance and work discipline.
Thus, it can be concluded that the principal’s efforts to improve the quality of the teaching and learning process at the public senior high school have been implemented through various programs and strategies, although there are still several aspects that need improvement in order to achieve more optimal educational quality.
